Let’s talk about pickle juice!

So many people have said that pickle juice helps them with their acid reflux but is there truth to it? For most people probably not. For starters, pickle juice is acidic and for many people acidic foods lead to worsened heartburn. But still, some swear by it!

There are a few potential benefits however to drinking pickle juice, if you can get past the “pucker factor”.

1. Good for dehydration. While there can be quite a bit of sodium in pickle juice, which can lead to dehydration if not careful, it also contains potassium, and water, which are all important for hydration. If you are on low sodium diet, you will want to limit pickle juice!!
For others who are working in the hot sun or doing hard workouts, 1-2oz of pickle juice will help replenish the nutrients you were sweating out.
2. Because pickles are a fermented food, the juice is loaded with probiotics. While store bought pickles aren’t as likely to contain good probiotics due to their processing and additives, home canned pickles are a great option! If you don’t can, check the farmers market or your local co-op for locally canned pickles! Probiotics are needed in the gut to keep it healthy and operating regularly.
3. Pickle juice can help@regulate blood sugar levels! Studies are beginning to show that when consumed prior to a meal, individuals with type 2 diabetes had reduced blood sugar spikes. Vinegar is known to i@prove the body’s response to insulin. So before your next meal, grab a shot glass of vinegar and drink up!
4. Pickles are a great source of good source of vitamins A and E and also contains a trace amount of antioxidants.
5. And pickles themselves have virtually no calories!! If you are watching your calories, you can have all the above benefits with around 10 calories per cup! It’s great for when you need a quick snack or are having a craving for Doritos or chips! The salt in the pickle and juice will kick the salt craving!
